In Greece, a “total lack of preparation” for fires that is only repeating itself

In Greece, a “total lack of preparation” for fires that is only repeating itself

Forest fires ravaged Greece over the weekend of July 26 and 27. With current weather conditions conducive to wildfires, the government's lack of preparedness has been singled out by the country's press, which is exasperated by presenting the same complaints every year.

From the north to the south of the country, Greece spent the entire weekend engulfed in flames. Driven by scorching temperatures and strong winds, the fires destroyed forests and homes.

“In April, the Prime Minister [the conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis] assured us that this year, 'the firefighters' numbers are higher than ever, and the number of volunteers is also increasing .' And he started listing the figures for planes, drones, firefighting vehicles, etc. But in recent days we have seen the destruction caused by fires take on uncontrollable proportions: in Kythera, in Attica, in Euboea, in Messinia, in Corinth, in Crete, in the North...,” Efsyn lists .

The left-wing newspaper headlined “Total Unpreparedness” on the front page of its edition today, with a full-page photo of a civilian holding a water hose.

"The current Prime Minister, when he was leader of the opposition, did not hesitate to blame the government of the time [led by Alexis Tsipras] for everything that was happening on the fire front. Yet he has not managed to demonstrate that he was capable of doing better," the opposition daily said.
